Burt Munro Challenge Weekend 2011
The annual Burt Munro Challenge is always a big weekend at Coachman's Inn. Coachman's range of accommodation options together with licensed restaurant and great parking makes it a terrific base for a fun weekend - you'll have to book well ahead to stay here!
We take a special interest in the Challenge because we sponsor The Coachman's Inn Racing Team, headed by ace driver Doug Wood who had a high profile weekend this year. Doug took out 1st Place in his Class on Friday in the Bluff Hill Climb, and a 3rd in Saturday's event at the Teretonga Track, and romped into 2nd place at the Wyndham street racing on the Sunday.
Kiwi Doug Wood (now living in Melbourne) was a serious club racer in Canterbury before he went to live in Australia in the early 1980s. At the urging of brother Frank (an equally keen long time racer), Doug renewed his competition license and came over for the very first Burt Munro Challenge in 2006. He was immediately bitten by the bug again, and hasn’t missed a Burt Munro since.
For the first 3 years, Doug rode Frank’s pre-’89 FZR400 Yamaha (affectionately known as Piglet) to various podium finishes. In the following 3 years, Doug brought his own bikes, an early R6 600cc Yamaha and P2, a later model FZR400, and rode them in different classes, as well as the well-loved Piglet to varying degrees of success in the top 4 placings.
Backing Doug, Team Coachman includes Frank & wife Julie Wood, Trev Wood & fiancée Leanne, ... and all Coachman personnel, who over the years have formed a great friendship with the Wood clan. Quote from Frank: “we intend to do every Burt Munro Classic event, but if we can’t stay at the Coachman, we would think twice about coming!”
